Review: I just wanted to share this: The 15" Rude sound edge hi hats are friggin AWESOME!
I was playing it today without ear plugs and it's of course super loud. So I put the ear plugs in and the amazing dark tone comes to life -- ear plugs kinda emulate how microphones hear the instrument and there's this dark layer underneath the bright stick attack.
It's just a "macho" sound that comes out of this monster that really RIPS. And playing it softly sounds really good, there's plenty of stick attack and the chick sound.... oooohhhhhh.... effortless to produce.
Just wanted to share my experience -- if you're into "dark-with-highs" sounds, get a 15" Rude... playing it = big smile

Review: Loud, dark, beefy, and sloshy. No, I'm not talking about a compilation album by The Who. Those would be my words to describe these hats. I did side by side comparisons with 3 other sets of RUDE hats, and this was what I found:

  • RUDE 15" Hi-Hat vs. RUDE 15" Sound Edge Hi-Hat

Hi-Hat was just a little darker sounding than the 15" SE Hi-Hat. It also had an "airy" sound, while the Sound Edge Hi-Hat was more focused. The Sound Edges were louder sounding than the regular 15" Hi-Hat.

  • RUDE 14" Sound Edge Hi-Hat vs. RUDE 15" Sound Edge Hi-Hat

The 14's were higher in pitch, a little punchier, and more brittle sounding than their 15 inch brother. I thought that the 14's sounded great when played, until I put them next to the 15's for comparison. After hearing the 15's, the 14's higher pitch was not to my liking. The 15's had a slightly darker, fuller sound than the 14's. Don't get me wrong, the 14's were good, and they'd be the best hats for Metal, Punk, or Hard Rock, but oddly enough, I think the 15's were a little more versatile. (that is, if you can work a large enough room to work around the extra volume).

  • 2002 RUDE 15" Sound Edge Hi-Hat vs. RUDE 15" Sound Edge Hi-Hat

I happened to run across a pair of these, and did a comparison before getting rid of them. The RUDE 2002's were brighter than the RUDES, and had a louder "chick". Other than that, they seemed the same.
