Description: The Flange Ride is a very rare model, 3 seen out of 1,000 cymbals examined. Known examples date from the early 1950s through mid 1950s based on trademarks. They seem to be part of the innovation of an edge flange which included Hi Hats. The 1948/9 year comes from an ad for Bop Flange Hats and a Zildjian catalog which is mentioned in Pinksterboer (The Cymbal Book, 1992, p150).

The Flange Hi Hats continued in production through the 1950s and early 1960s, then reappeared for a short time in the early 1970s. The Flange Ride appears to have dropped out after the mid 1950s, although it resurfaced as a Sabian ride cymbal in the early 1980s. These were later named Sound Control. There were also flange crashes in the Sabian offering.

The low number of Flange Rides will in part be because not many of that model were manufactured compared to other ride models. The number recorded might also be low because they are hard to spot unless you have photos from the right angle and lighting. If we only had the straight down bottom view of the 22" ride shown it would be hard to be sure it was a flat flange we are seeing. This can also be true of straight down top views. So who knows how many might have gone unnoticed.
